Churches (Spirit – Indie 30, Day 19)

Bootsnall Prompt: Some places have the power to make even the most die-hard agnostic reconsider their position. Have you ever been in a place where you felt more alive or more connected to nature, the universe, or a higher power than anywhere else?

I’m pretty much the definition of agnostic. I’m not an atheist because that’s just too depressing, but I don’t connect myself with any major religious group. I believe there’s something bigger than us, but that I don’t know what it is.

But sometimes, when I enter a Christian church, a feeling comes over me that perhaps Christianity is the religion that has it figured out. Perhaps it’s the grandeur of Catholic churches that takes my breath away. Or maybe the palpable feeling of devotion that emanates from worshippers inside. I like the cadence of Mass given in Latin even though I can’t understand it.

When I’m overwhelmed by this feeling, it always surprises me. It’s like being socked in the stomach, my breath goes out but doesn’t come back in, and I feel lighter. Safe and unsafe at the same time.

I’m not sure I can ever explain the sensation. And I don’t want to. So I’ll just share some photos of places that have stirred up my spirit.
