3.1, no walking

3.1, no walking

Happy Day-After National Running Day!!

I was too tired to post this last night, but I did run for National Running Day! It was my first run after the half marathon and it felt awesome. No muscles were too sore, I was back on my familiar paved course, and I ran without my watch. I found out that the playlist I made for the half is now perfect for training. I didn’t listen to much of it during the race, but when a song came on that I did hear during the race, I could remember exactly where I was and how I felt at that time. For example, “Hey Beautiful” by The Solids will always be that later  part of mile 13. And to top it all off, the weather yesterday was just gorgeous.

I set a new goal yesterday: to be able to run a 5k without walking any of it.

Early in our training Beth and I realized that we would have to focus on either covering the 13.1 distance or on running for more than one mile without a walking break. I can definitely run a full mile now, but not consistently. I can however do an 8-mile run/walk consistently, but only if I top out around 6 or 8 minutes of running in a row. If I go beyond 10 minutes of running in a row, I have to walk longer to recover and it slows down my overall time and my motivation to keep going.

So, now I’m going to be focusing on shorter distances and running as much of it as I can. Last night, I ran over a mile, then walked for 2-3 minutes, and then ran most of the second mile back home (which is all uphill on the way back). I’ll be doing lots of 2-3 mile loops to get consistent on that first mile and then add the second one. (But if you want to go for a long run, let me know!)

Here are some photos from yesterday:
