How-To: Whip together a healthy (and delicious) breakfast

This post comes from Emily Levenson of, and is part of a special day of shenanigans from other Pittsburgh Bloggers. You can see my post over on D & T: in the burgh, where my fiance and I review a fabulous Neapolitan pizza place in Shadyside.

I was excited to be paired up with Erin for today’s blog swap from the minute I read the title of her blog [Don’t Forget to Eat]. As someone who never forgets to eat, I knew I would have a lot of great things to share. Including a how-to guide for putting together one of the most insanely easy and delicious (and healthy) breakfast treats out there.

It seems like every summer I become obsessive about a specific kind of food. It likely started with smoothies. Because seriously, who can get enough.

Last year, I was all about refrigerator oats.

The good (and potentially bad) news, is that this obsession doesn’t seem to be fading anytime soon.

I’ve found that there is a method to the refrigerator oats madness. And that they are an incredibly forgiving and flexible breakfast (or snack) option with an unlimited potential for flavor combinations.

They can even satisfy the pickiest of eaters (me).

Refrigerator Oats Basics

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup milk (cow, almond, rice, coconut, etc.)
  • 1 tbs sweetener (maple syrup, brown sugar, jam or jelly…)
  • 2-3 tbs of chopped fruit of your choice (apples, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, mango, etc.)
  • tbs chia seeds (optional)

  1. Combine all ingredients into a jar or tupperware container.
  2. Shake or stir to combine.
  3. Place in refrigerator and let sit overnight.
  4. Choose what flavor you want for breakfast, grab a spoon, and dig in!

Potential flavor combinations:

Thanks, Emily! I’m looking forward to trying refrigerator oats!
